The Mike Metcalfe 30 Hour Soccer Marathon operating in its fifth year has been working along side the Calgary Health Trust and Health Region to better the lives of its patients coping with cancer. One of the many of Mike's goals has been to improve the comfort of the patients and ease of the many procedures they endure. In 2006, a portable ultrasound machine was purchased to aid in the insertion of central catheters, a typically painful and inaccurate procedure. In years past bedside vital sign monitors saved time and increased productivity of the hospital staff, Endoscopic Ultrasound equipment was purchased to aid in diagnoses of many types of cancer, and our fund raising helped renovate and improve the Apheresis unit at the Foothills Hospital.
The cooperation has been so successful over the past five years that Calgary has become recognized as one of the most desirable medical centers for both U.S. and Canadian doctors to train in the fields relating to Bronchoscopic diagnosis and treatment. Facilities have been setup at the Foothills Hospital in order to accommodate these visiting professionals and further their education.
